ISS Student Spotlight | Kelley Benson

Tell us a bit about yourself, what attracted you to this field, and why you chose this program?
My name is Kelley Benson, and I have worked in the security field for over 15 years. I spent 20 years as a military spouse, raising three children and supporting my husband’s demanding career. When the time came that my family could support me, I made the decision to invest in myself and pursue my long-held goal of earning a master’s degree. My professional experience and passion for national security naturally drew me to this field.
I chose this program specifically because of its strong reputation, flexibility, and diverse course offerings. I initially selected classes based on personal interest but quickly discovered a deeper passion for human rights and how they intersect with national security—an area I am now committed to pursuing further.
How have you connected with students and instructors during your time in the program?
Despite the distance, I’ve connected with other students through discussion boards, group projects, and virtual events. These platforms have made it possible to build genuine academic relationships. I have also been fortunate to develop strong relationships with faculty members. Their openness to communication—whether via email, Zoom, or other platforms—has greatly enhanced my learning and personal growth.
What skills or lessons have you gained through the ISS program, and how have these experiences shaped your personal and professional goals?
Through the ISS program, I’ve developed stronger research, writing, and critical thinking skills. I’ve also learned the value of perseverance and self-advocacy. My experiences have shaped my professional goals toward integrating human rights advocacy into national security work, and personally, they’ve given me a renewed sense of purpose and resilience.
What advice would you give to prospective students, and is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience in the program?
My advice to prospective students is simple: Believe in yourself. Online learning requires discipline and drive, but the flexibility and support you receive make the journey incredibly rewarding if you stay committed. Finally, I would just like to add how deeply grateful I am for this opportunity. This program has not only helped me grow academically and professionally but has also allowed me to show my children that it's never too late to chase your dreams.
